Ruptly is live with a view over the Tokyo Olympic Stadium on Friday, July 23 as the 2020 Summer Olympic Games kicks off in Japan.

The Games are scheduled to take place from 23 July to 8 August 2021 after being postponed last year due to the pandemic. This is the first time that the Olympic Games have been postponed and rescheduled, rather than cancelled.

Shortly before the start of the games, on July 8, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga declared another state of emergency in Tokyo until August 22. This decision means no spectators, not even local Japanese attendees, will be able to watch the games in person in the Japanese capital.

The Olympics will feature 33 sports at 339 events across 42 venues. The Paralympics will feature 22 sports at 539 events across 21 venues.
