Several thousand foreign and Japanese journalists queued up to get the Olympic Stadium as the only audience besides VIP guests for the official opening ceremony of the summer Olympics, that kicked off in the Japanese capital on Friday.

Despite 32 degree Celsius temperatures (89 degrees Fahrenheit), press formed long lines for their two-leg transfer from the Tokyo 2020 Main Press Centre to the Stadium. The strict COVID protocol for foreign journalists bans them from using public transport and most of the taxis for 14 days after arriving in Tokyo, forcing all media to use shuttle buses.

Crowds of residents gathered outside the main Olympic venue to welcome the foreign guests, in spite of the state of emergency imposed by the government to curb the virus, since July 12.
