Thousands of Japanese citizens took part in a march through Tokyo on Sunday in favour of a constitutional amendment. At the same time, there were protests in favour of the refugees from Myanmar and against the military coup that took place there.

After a snap general election that granted the governing LPD party the absolute majority in the parliament, there has been the call to amend the Japanese constitution and to redraft it.

While many members of parliament seem to be favouring this plan, Sunday’s march underlines a section of public support for this political move.

After the surrender of Japan in 1945, the country was first occupied by the US and set itself a US tailor-made constitution which prohibited any standing army, as well as an anti-militaristic nature of the country.
