Japan: Tokyoites try to beat the heat as sweltering temps greet Games

Temperatures soared to 34 degrees Celsius (94 degrees Fahrenheit) in Tokyo on Monday, with humidity levels above 80 percent as unstable summer weather continued around the country.

Local residents carrying umbrellas to limit their exposure to the sun could be seen at at the world-famous Shibuya crossing, while others enjoyed the cooling water mist system in the Tokyo Midtown Gardens.

As the Tokyo Midtown Management assistant manager Marina Suzuki explained: “The garden is used as a veranda, and mist is sprayed to let visitors feel the coolness that is typical of Japan.”

Local residents Gaku Takebe and Keisuke Kimura were hopeful the Japanese Olympic athletes could use the weather to their advantage to secure gold medals.

“I think Japan has a slight advantage because we are used to this heat,” said Kimura.

“It’s also the first time for the Japanese to be so hot. I think it’s going to be so hot today that I think we can have a fair fight with people from overseas, so I hope to see a “hot” match,” added Takebe.

On Saturday, recent Wimbledon champion and men’s number one Novak Djokovic described the humidity in Tokyo as ‘brutal.’

SOT, Gaku Takebe, Local resident (Japanese): “It’s hot in Tokyo. I just got a call from a friend of mine who collapsed from heat stroke today, so I guess it’s that hot, but I hope all the players will drink water and stay hydrated and do their best.”

SOT, Keisuke Kimura, Local resident (Japanese): “It’s hot, isn’t it? It’s very hot, and I sweat a lot, so my armpits get soaked with sweat and I feel embarrassed. I’d like the players to wear clothes that don’t soak up sweat.”

SOT, Keisuke Kimura, Local resident (Japanese): “I think heat is a big factor in performance in sports, and I think Japan has a slight advantage because we are used to this heat.”
