American swimming star Katie Ledecky has spoken of competing for Team USA at the Paris 2024 Olympics and hinted at Los Angeles in 2028, after her stunning performance in Tokyo with a tally of two golds and two silvers.
“I kind of laughed at the retirement thing today cause I was just surprised at that word even came up because I think I’ve been pretty clear that it is in the picture for me and I bring 2028 up,” said Ledecky at a press conference, at the Tokyo 2020 Main Press Center on Saturday night after her last competition day.
The two-times Olympic champion in Tokyo stressed that she was happy with just two gold medals, noting it meant a lot to her to become the first ever winner in the 1500m event. The 24 year-old confessed that she wasn’t going to beat herself up as she had realised how fast she used to swim in Rio in 2016 and that it was hard to do it five years later and even further.
Nevertheless Ledecky shared her plans to continue representing the USA, as “it would be an honour to go to fourth Games and it would be an honour to go to fifth Games and compete on home soil.”
Katie Ledecky was only 15 when she made her Olympic debut in 2012 in London and took her first title in the 800-metre event.
She went on to win four golds in the Rio de Janeiro Games four years later. Her four medals in Tokyo give her 10 total across three Olympics, including seven golds and three silvers. In Tokyo Ledecky made history becoming the first swimmer to win the women’s 800-metre freestyle event at three consecutive Olympics.
