Latvia: Afghan refugees seen at Jurmala refugee centre

Afghan refugees were seen living at a refugee centre in Jurmala, operated by the Interior Ministry, in footage from Saturday.

Refugees from Afghanistan and other countries were seen walking around the centre and using the dining hall.

SOT, Kristel, Refugee from South Africa: “We didn’t get a chance to visit that much for now. We’re still [settling down] here. It’s a beautiful country.”

SOT, Kristel, Refugee from South Africa: “That thing, that we don’t know, if we get to Riga, where to go, how to walk around. But we’ve been walking around here, to the beach there. It’s a beautiful place, it’s quite. I have personally noticed that people are friendly, compare to some places, that we visit.”

SOT, Refugee from Afghanistan: “There are a lot of Taliban in Afghanistan. We removed our country, because this country was difficult for my father. My father has a job in an equal office, this was a big reason. And we have to come here, and that country is very difficult for us. We can’t live there.”

Earlier, on August 25, the European Court of Human Rights required Latvia and Poland to provide housing, food, clean water and medicines to all migrants stuck on the border with Belarus.

The ECHR stressed the decision should not be interpreted as a demand to let the illegal immigrants into its territory.
