Switzerland: UN refugee agency says Afghanistan could face "major" humanitarian crisis

The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) warned about the looming crisis of displaced Afghans in the Taliban-controlled country during a briefing in Geneva on Friday.
“Afghanistan has an internal displacement crisis that we have been trying to talk about. What we are emphasising is that that cannot be allowed to become a humanitarian catastrophe, and that’s why we have been trying to appeal to the world to don’t turn away your attention or focus at this stage from Afghans and Afghanistan,” United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees spokesperson Babar Baloch said.
Barloch also stressed that they haven’t seen a “large refugee influx in terms of a big number crossing over into Pakistan and Iran or other places.”
“The reality is the displacement crisis is inside Afghanistan,” Baloch continued. “We’re talking about more than six hundred thousand Afghans that have been displaced during this year,” he added.
Baloch touched on the 80 percent of the displaced being women and children in a landlocked country such as Afghanistan.
“If support, if trade is not going into there, we could be facing a major, major crisis,” he concluded.
Pakistan already hosts around 3 million Afghan refugees, with the UNHCR estimating a worst-case scenario of over 500,000 refugees fleeing to Pakistan and the surrounding countries in the coming months.
