NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg warned of possible further sanctions against Russia amid escalation on its border with Ukraine, as he spoke at a press conference following the meeting of NATO Ministers of Foreign Affairs in Riga on Tuesday.

Denouncing a concentration of Russian forces on its South-Western border as an act of aggression against a potential NATO ally, Stoltenberg said: “Any future Russian aggression against Ukraine would come at a high price, and have serious politic and economic consequences for Russia.”

NATO chief pledged the full military support to Ukraine, as well as Latvia and Poland, following the border crisis with Belarus. “We keep our defence strong”, Stoltenberg said, adding that the alleged use of migrants for ‘hybrid’ aggression by Belarusian authorities is “cynical and inhumane.”

Meetings of the North Atlantic Council (NAC) at the level of Foreign Affairs Ministers are set to take place in the Latvian capital on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The meeting takes place amid ongoing tensions between Ukraine and Russia as well as the migrant crisis on the Belarus-Poland border, where thousands of migrants have set up camp and attempted to cross into the EU.
