Riga Eastern Clinical Hospital has deployed additional beds in its garage and reopened a mobile mortuary, as seen on Tuesday, amid an increasing influx of patients with COVID-19.

Hospital staff could be seen taking a deceased patient from a vehicle.
The mobile morgue - a gray container with a refrigerator - also could be seen near the clinic building.

Aleksey Vishnyakov, the head of the Emergency Clinic of the Riga Eastern Hospital, said that additional staff had been hired from November 1. The garage makeshift ER can accommodate up to 50 patients.

Vishnyakov also noted that ‘so far’ COVID beds “become free in two cases: when the patient gets better and leaves for his family or when he dies.”

“And then the mobile mortuary starts to do its work,” he added.

According to recent data compiled by Johns Hopkins University, 57,791 cases of COVID-19 and 626 deaths related to the novel coronavirus have been registered in Latvia within 28 days.
