Lebanon: Former PM Saad Hariri quits politics, steps away from parliamentary election

Former prime minister and head of the Lebanese ‘Future Movement’, Saad Hariri, announced in Beirut on Monday that he suspended his political activities and are refraining from running for the parliamentary elections scheduled for late March.

“As a matter of responsibility, and because I am convinced that there is no room for any positive opportunity in Lebanon in light of Iranian influence, international confusion, national division, the return of sectarianism and the state’s wear and tear, I announce the following, first: suspending my work in political life and calling on my family in the ‘Future Movement’ to take the same step, secondly: not to run for the parliamentary elections and not to submit any nominations from the ‘Future Movement’ or in the name of the movement,” said Hariri in a speech he delivered at his home in downtown Beirut.

“We are staying to serve our people, our people and our country, but our decision is to suspend any role or direct responsibility in the authority, the prosecution and politics in its traditional sense, and we will remain from Our position as citizens who adhere to Rafic Hariri’s project to prevent civil war and work for a better life for all Lebanese,” he added.

Hariri has headed three governments since 2009. He submitted the

resignation of his third government about two weeks after the start of the popular protests against the political elite on October 17, 2019.

In November 2020, he was re-assigned to form the government, but after political dispute, he announced his apology for not forming the government and left the country.

Lebanon is witnessing the worst economic collapse in its history, coinciding with a continuous and unprecedented collapse in the value of the Lebanese pound. The Lebanese accuse their leaders of not doing enough to address the ongoing crisis caused by rampant corruption.

SOT, Saad Hariri, Former Lebanese Prime Minister (Arabic): I may be able to bear all of this, but what I cannot bear is that a number of Lebanese who I see no reason to stay in politics except to serve them, consider me one of the pillars of the authority that caused the disaster, and that prevents any new political representation that would produce solutions for our country and our people, in terms of assuming responsibility, I was the only one who responded to the revolution of October 17, 2019, so I submitted the resignation of my government, and I was the only one who tried, after the August 4 disaster in Beirut, to change the way of work through a government of specialists, and the Lebanese know in both cases what the result was and they incurred their living flesh the cost of denial.”
