Friday prayers were held at the Coral petrol station in the Jiyeh area, south of Beirut, in protest against the ongoing fuel crisis and its shortages in the country.

Footage from Friday showed Sheikh Ali al-Hussein giving a sermon and leading worshippers afterwards, while members of the Lebanese army were present on site.

“Mosques are often now, during Friday prayers, empty of people. People no longer come to the mosque as before and as we used to. This is because most of the people are queuing at the gas stations. Of course, some of them are standing since the day before.”, said Sheikh Al-Hussein.

Sheikh Al-Hussein called for exercising “the highest standards of self-restraint” in the face of “problems, fighting and chaos” at gas stations, warning that “if sedition occurs, it will not be possible to avoid [its consequences].”

Lebanon suffers from multiple crises that have affected all aspects of life and one of its recent manifestations has been a lack of fuel in the country.

SOT, Ali Al-Hussein, Imam (Arabic): “Mosques are often now, during Friday prayers, empty of people. People no longer come to the mosque as before and as we used to. This is because most of the people are queuing at the gas stations. Of course, some of them are standing since the day before.”

SOT, Ali Al-Hussein, Imam (Arabic): “There are problems, fighting and great chaos that occurs at the (fuel) stations. Our message to our brothers who are refuelling is that what is required today is self-restraint, the highest standards of self-control. Because the problem is that if sedition occurs, it will not be possible to avoid [its consequences].”

SOT, Worshipper (Arabic): “The best thing they did was the Friday prayer, and even if we didn’t refuel, there is the Friday prayer. That’s the best thing they did. I was in a queue, and I couldn’t believe a prayer was organised here. This thing is happening for the first time in my life. It’s the best thing the station has done.”

SOT, Worshipper (Arabic): “We appeal to the politicians in this country, who do not feel [the struggle] of the poor people, who live without diesel, without gasoline, without bread and without gas. God willing, things will get better.”
