Lebanon: Mikati tearfully addresses Lebanese people after new government formed

After a year of feuding over cabinet seats, Lebanese President Michael Aoun signed a decree to form a new government led by Prime Minister-Designate Najib Mikati in Baabda on Friday.

The Lebanese Presidency reported that Aoun and Mikati signed the decree to form the new government at an event attended by Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, while the Cabinet Secretary-General, Mohammed Makiyah, read out the list of ministers forming the Cabinet, which consists of 24 specialists; some of them are widely-known for their successes in economic, medical, cultural and media fields.

“I’d like to salute former PM Hassan Diab for everything he had done during the previous difficult phase […] the situation today is exceptional, and my speech would be from the heart,” said Prime Minister-Designate Mikati.

This announcement comes after several consultations and communications that occurred during the last few hours to overcome the obstacles that hindered the formation of the long-awaited government.

“The tear in the mother’s eye and she cannot buy a ‘Panadol’ pill in this country, the situation is very challenging, and we must join efforts, nothing is perfect […] but we assure that we will be working as one unified team with hope and determination,” said Mikati.
On July 26, President Aoun tasked Mikati to form the government after the resignation of former PM Saad Hariri in mid-July. Mikati is the third PM to be entrusted with forming the government by President Aoun. The government of Hassan Diab resigned over a year ago following the tragic explosion at Beirut Port and amid a crippling economic crisis.

Normally, and after forming a new government, the PM reads a written statement in which he states his government policy and orientations, but the situation today is exceptional and my speech comes from the heart.”

SOT, Najib Mikati, Lebanese Prime Minister-designate (Arabic): “If a mother’s eldest son leaves the country and she has tears in her eyes, she can’t buy a Panadol or Aspirin pill, we all know this, the situation is extremely challenging but it is no impossible if we stand together as Lebanese and we must join efforts. Today, in cooperation with His Excellency the President, we managed to form the new government and it took much time; nothing is perfect. but we assure you that we will be working as one unified team with hope and determination in order to prevent frustrations and despair. This is what I promise you with, we will not spare a second without contacting with the international bodies to ensure the simplest necessities.”

SOT, Najib Mikati, Lebanese Prime Minister-designate (Arabic): “I will not talk about the third [of parliament], but I assure you that I [the PM] have the two thirds that helped me in building Lebanon and restore its position; I have the two-thirds of those willing to achieve Lebanon’s resurrection. We no more want to use the term ‘blocking third’, we don’t even want anyone to block our work, and whoever does, they shall be expelled and bear responsibility for this.”

SOT, Najib Mikati, Lebanese Prime Minister-designate (Arabic): “The government will soon propose a plan to save the country. Regarding the lifting of subsidies, we are completely broke today and have no funds [dollars] for subsidies. We don’t want to lift the subsidy but we don’t have enough funds or reserves to continue the subsidy, that is why all of us must put up with this situation. We are in a plane that has to go for an emergency landing, and we ask the passengers and Lebanese people to fasten their safety belts in order to quickly get out of this crisis. All of us, including me, have to tolerate this situation.”

SOT, Najib Mikati, Lebanese Prime Minister-designate (Arabic): “We will deal with anyone, this government is formed for the best interest of Lebanon, we may deal with Israel of course, and will deal with (Syria) and cooperate with it for the interest of Lebanon and Lebanese people.”
