Lebanese President Michel Aoun said that the deadly clashes that erupted in Beirut “brought us back the memory of the days we vowed not to live again,” speaking from Baabda Presidential Palace on Thursday.

“It is unacceptable for weapons to return as a language of communication between the Lebanese parties, because we all agreed to turn this dark page from our black history,” Aoun said.

“What happened today is not acceptable, especially at a time when everyone has agreed to resort to the rule of law and institutions. This state, which guarantees freedoms, especially freedom of expression, alone, through its institutions, is the only valid reference for dealing with any problem, dispute or objection,” he went on to say.

On Thursday, violence erupted in the Lebanese capital Beirut, amid a protest organised by Amal movement calling for the dismissal of the investigative judge in the case of the Beirut port explosion.

According to Interior Minister Bassam al-Mawlawi, at least six people were killed, and 30 others were injured, according to the Red Cross.
