Armed groups withdrew from Tripoli’s Ain Zara on Saturday, days after seizing government buildings in the district.

The buildings were initially seized last Wednesday, two days before planned presidential elections that have since been postponed were supposed to occur.

“We thank the members of the municipality, the police, the public security, and the traffic officers today for opening the road. Citizens are happy that the road was opened,” said Lieutenant-Colonel Omar Idris, Head of Special Task Force in Tripoli Municipality.

In the withdrawal process, blocks, as well as sand berms, were removed using heavy machinery.
Earlier this week, heavy military presence could be observed in the streets after armed groups called for mobilisation amid presidential elections and a worsening political crisis.
