Libya: Protesters rally in Tripoli to reject elections in absence of constitution

A group of protesters rallied in front of the offices of the High National Elections Commission in Tripoli on Tuesday after a call for a sit-in protest rejecting the country’s upcoming elections.
“How can you accept war criminals as presidents? How can you accept these applications, which should not be accepted? There are legal processes, so how can you accept someone who attacked Tripoli, killed people and families, while having martyrs in Tripoli?” said a protester seemingly referring to Khalifa Haftar, commander of the Libyan National Army (LNA) who announced earlier in November he would be running in Libya’s presidential elections due in December.
Protesters also rejected the elections citing the absence of a constitution regulating the electoral law in the country.
“These elections cannot be held for free people without a constitutional foundation or constitution. We reject this election clearly,” stated another protester.
The 2021 Libyan presidential election is scheduled to be held on December 24.

SOT, Protester (Arabic): “Today we’re performing a sit-in against the negotiators. How can you accept war criminals as presidents? How can you accept theses applications, which should not be accepted? There are legal processes, so how can you accept someone who attacked Tripoli, killed people and families, while having martyrs in Tripoli? If you accept him, then it means you are with him.”

SOT, Protester (Arabic): “Where was the democracy on 4/4? Where was the democracy when planes bombed Al Zawiya? Where was the democracy when the planes bombed Tripoli? Where was democracy when planes bombed Tripoli International Airport? Where was the democracy when they bombed the Aviation College in Misrata? Where was the democracy when they bombed the military college? [They were] young people upholding the law, protecting their country with weapons from outsiders, and not from the inside.”

SOT, Protester (Arabic): “In front of the Election Committee, our demands are clear and noble to the world. We do not reject the elections, we are the ones who ensured the elections on 7/7/2012, but these elections cannot be held for free people without a constitutional foundation or constitution. We reject this elections clearly.”
