Libya: Dozens protest Haftar and Gaddafi’s candidacy for presidency in Tripoli

Dozens of demonstrators gathered in Tripoli’s main square on Friday to protest against the candidacy application of Khalifa Haftar and Saif al-Islam al-Gaddafi for the upcoming presidential election.

Protesters were seen holding banners critical to the presidential electoral law, issued by decree by parliamentary speaker Aguila Saleh, for allowing what they describe as “criminals” to run for office.

“Saif and Haftar, no, these are war criminals and they cannot represent us anywhere. We choose people who represent us from the revolutionaries and the free people,” said protester Ibrahim Mohammed Hamed.

Footage also shows protesters holding banners reading: “Presidential elections without a constitution mean a return to dictatorship and tyranny.”

“Holding elections in the current circumstances and times, and flawed laws without a constitution, is considered a danger to the February 17 revolution,” said member of the Libyan Political Dialogue Council Abdul Qader Al-Huwaili.

Applications of Khalifa Haftar, a military leader who played a major role in the Libyan civil war, and Saif Al-Islam Gaddafi, the son of Muammar Gaddafi, for the presidential run were accepted by the Libyan Electoral Commission last week.

Libya’s elections are due to be held on 24 December 2021, after having been postponed twice since 2018 due to the Second Libyan Civil War.
