Libya: Syrian doctors assist medics in Tobruk amid staff shortages

Syrian health workers were seen attending to patients in Tobruk on Sunday as part of the Libyan Health ministry’s programme to alleviate staff shortages in the health sector.

Specialists in radiology, paediatrics and orthopaedics as well as nurses are among those joining forces with the local personnel.

“Definitely, there are obstacles that hinder our work, whether issues related to the department itself or connected to the ongoing situation in the country in general. But in my opinion everyone is striving to overcome these hardships,” said Mourhij Sharha, a Syrian paediatrician.

Tobruk’s Medical Center released a statement saying all paperwork will be taken care of for the medics in order to ensure they swiftly begin attending to patients.

Libya has been facing shortages in medical personnel due to years of the conflict in the country. ​

SOT, Mourhij Sharha, Syrian paediatrician (Arabic): “Of course, the basis of our work at the centre lies on assisting departments to fill the gaps emerged from the lack of doctors at the centre. Being a paediatrician, my duty is to help the department and provide my colleagues with the essential medical assistance. Definitely, there are obstacles that hinder our work, whether issues related to the department itself or connected to the ongoing situation in the country in general. But in my opinion everyone is striving to overcome these hardships.”

SOT, Ali Mohamed, Patient (Arabic): “In fact, we have been taken care of by Syrian medics who work honestly with conscience and integrity. We have heard nothing but good words about the cluster of Libyan doctors and nurses. I mean we are incapable of neglecting their roles; Libyans, Egyptians, Sudanese and all the doctors who have high morals and suffered a lot to take care of us.

SOT, Adnan Boudiya, Tobruk Medical Center (Arabic): “Of course, Ministry of Health of the Government of National Unity has decided to draw up a contract to hire Syrian medical consultants. Consequently, it had agreed upon stipulating special contracts for 20 consultants. So, we had set up contracts with these consultants via an employment recruitment company along with the national group.”

SOT, Neebal Farha, Syrian anaesthesiologist (Arabic): “I came with a group of 12 Syrian doctors and medics in two batches. The first batch consists of seven doctors while the second of five. We headed to the Centre with a range of specialities, including Paediatrics, orthopaedics, general internist and other specialities, to support the medics at the Tobruk Medical Centre.”
