LIVE: Opposition calls for Saakashvili’s release at Rustavi rally

Georgian opposition supporters rally in Rustavi on Saturday, November 6 to demand the release of former Georgian president Mikhail Saakashvili from custody. The protest takes place outside the prison where Saakashvili is currently being held.

Saakashvili was arrested on October 1 after he returned to his homeland ahead of the municipal elections in Georgia.

The former president was charged with abuse of power and sentenced to a combined nine years in jail in absentia in 2013, when he fled the country. He has denied the charges.

The rally comes one week after the ruling Georgian Dream party won the second round of the municipal elections on October 30.
