Live outside courthouse as opening statements in Kimberly Potter’s trial begin

Ruptly is live from outside Hennepin County District Court in Minneapolis on Wednesday, December 8 as the opening statements in the trial of former Brooklyn Centre police officer Kimberly Potter for the killing of Daunte Wright, an unarmed black man, begin.

Daunte Wright was a 20-year-old black man that was fatally shot by Potter on April 14, 2021 during a traffic stop. After a brief struggle with officers, Wright was shot at close range. Following the incident, the man drove off a short distance, but collided with another vehicle and hit a concrete barrier. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police stated that Potter meant to use her taser but accidentally grabbed her gun instead.

Hennepin County Judge Regina Chu expects the trial to end by December 24.
