US Senators are convening in Washington DC on Thursday, January 13, to consider and vote on Republican Senator Ted Cruz’s bill to impose sanctions on Russia’s Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.

The legislation would impose sanctions on the pipeline within 15 days, and a presidential move to lift or waive them would be subject to a congressional vote.

The €11 billion ($12.3bn) pipeline project is financed by Russia’s Gazprom alongside Germany’s Uniper and BASF, Anglo-Dutch firm Shell, Austria’s OMV and France’s Engie, and is to increase the amount of gas being transported under the Baltic Sea to 55 billion cubic metres per year.
