Mali: Thousands rally in support of ruling junta, decry ECOWAS sanctions

Thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of Bamako, Friday, after a call by the ruling military junta for Malians to protest against the additional sanctions imposed by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) over delayed elections in the country.

“We have a country divided in two, those who have everything and those who have nothing and ECOWAS instead of remedying this, imposes sanctions on us. We have no more factories, no more trains, our children are out of work, we’re really fed up. Leave our authorities for our good,” a protester said.

The sanctions come in response to Malian military leaders’ desire to postpone elections until 2025. Mali’s military ruler Assimi Goita has criticised the sanctions and decided to close its land borders with the countries of the group.
