About 380 Central American and Mexican migrants were evicted early on Sunday morning from the ‘La Esperanza’ camp near a highway at the border crossing between Tijuana and San Diego.

Footage shows the eviction operation carried out by Mexican authorities supported by military and riot police. The migrants withdrew peacefully and were then taken in buses to three shelters set up to house them. Heavy machinery then removed the remains of the makeshift camp.

“It was all of a sudden, all of a sudden…a lot of police, and the children got very uncomfortable. The children started to cry because they get scared, you get scared as an adult. They would have told us to leave, we would have looked for them because you know very well that this was not going to last forever. I have been here for six or seven months and I knew that this had to end, I was aware, one is an adult and one thinks sensibly. Just as you think, they should have thought about the children,” said Marielena Gascon, a Honduran migrant evicted from the camp.

According to local reports, Mexican authorities will keep a special patrol in the area to prevent the establishment of a new camp.

SOT, Marielena Gascon, Honduran migrant (Spanish): “This is very upsetting, because [it was] at four o’clock in the morning, at the time when you have your best sleep. It was all of a sudden, all of a sudden…a lot of police, and the children got very uncomfortable. The children started to cry because they get scared, you get scared as an adult. They would have told us to leave, we would have looked for them because you know very well that this was not going to last forever. I have been here for six or seven months and I knew that this had to end, I was aware, one is an adult and one thinks sensibly. Just as you think, they should have thought about the children.”

SOT, Irma Garmendi, Salvadoran migrant (Spanish): “My kitchen cooker, the gas tank, my mattress where my children slept, their toys and their clothes were thrown away. All the food we had, everything was left there, in the tent. Everything was left there.”
