President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador called for a ‘pause’ in relations with Spain during a speech at the National Palace, Mexico City, on Wednesday.
“I think it would be in the interests of Mexicans and Spaniards, and of course the people of Mexico and the people of Spain, to take a pause in relations,” said Lopez Obrador.
The president added that the decision was influenced by a ‘conspiracy at the top’ of the governments of both countries which ‘Mexico bore the brunt of.’
“Let’s give ourselves time to respect each other and not be seen as a land of conquest,” Lopez Obrador continued, stating, ‘we don’t want [Spain] to steal from us.’
Diplomatic tensions became strained between Spain and Mexico after Lopez Obrador sent a letter to King Felipe VI in 2019, seeking an apology for the European conquest of the Central American country, which was then published by Spanish media.

SOT, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, President of Mexico (Spanish): “This is the case with Spanish companies. And I would like it to take some time for it to normalise so that we can take a pause. I think it would be in the interests of Mexicans and Spaniards, and of course the people of Mexico and the people of Spain, to take a pause in relations, because there was a conspiracy at the top, an economic-political promiscuity at the top of the governments of Mexico and Spain, but for three six-year periods in a row, and Mexico bore the brunt of it, they plundered it.”

SOT, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, President of Mexico (Spanish): “So it is better to give us time, a pause. Maybe when the government changes, relations will be re-established and I would hope that when I am no longer here, they will not be the same as they were before.”

SOT, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, President of Mexico (Spanish): “Yes, the pause is: let’s give ourselves time to respect each other and not be seen as a land of conquest. In other words, we do want to have good relations with all the governments, with all the peoples of the world, but we don’t want them to steal from us. Just as the Spaniards don’t want people from any country, and they are right to do so, to steal from them, we don’t want them to steal from us either. So, let’s wait, because it was a lot.”
