The Himalayan plateau is one of the most treacherous places on earth, home to the world’s highest mountains, and certainly not the ideal location to carry out military drills.

But situated on the disputed 4,000 kilometre border between India and China, the arid region of Auli - known as the gateway to the Himalayas - is playing host to hundreds of Indian and US soldiers as they undertake high altitude training.

As tensions mount with Beijing, troops from the US Airbourne division and their Indian counterparts are rehearsing casualty evacuation and combat medical aid.
