NATO's Stoltenberg and Colombian Pres Duque defend Ukraine's right to pursue NATO membership

Both NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg and Colombian President Ivan Duque defended Ukraine’s right to pursue NATO membership amid ongoing tension with Russia, speaking at a press conference in Brussels on Monday.

“Every sovereign nation has the fundamental right to choose its own path, and we call on all to respect this right,” said Stoltenberg.

Although Moscow denied it had any plans to invade Ukraine, it still urged NATO not to permit Ukraine and other former Soviet countries to join the organisation as members.

“All countries in the world must be free to exercise their sovereignty and decide if they want to join NATO freely,” said Duque.

Stoltenberg also urged Russia to choose the ‘dialogue’ path and demonstrate a willingness to reach de-escalation by moving its military build-up away from the border with Ukraine.

SOT, Jens Stoltenberg, NATO Secretary-General: “NATO remains ready to engage in meaningful dialogue with Russia and the best way for Russia to demonstrate its readiness to find a peaceful solution is to de-escalate and remove their forces which are now threatening Ukraine and choose the path of diplomacy. We agreed that every sovereign nation has the fundamental right to choose its own path, and we call on all to respect this right.”

We agreed that all parties should play a constructive role for regional peace and stability. So dear president, once again, thank you for coming here. SOT, Ivan Duque, Colombian President: “All countries in the world must be free to exercise their sovereignty and decide if they want to join NATO freely. And they are also available and should be available to decide in which of the forms to become a member of NATO they can participate, according to NATO’s charter. And no nation can by force, coerce or try to pressure a country not to comply with their sovereign right to join this very important organisation.”

I also believe that you have said something very important about NATO’s willingness to have a dialogue in order to de-escalate the current situation. And I think that’s the better path for the world.”
