Special police units arrived on the scene in Amsterdam on Tuesday, where an armed gunman was holding at least one person hostage inside an Apple store.
Footage showed a tank-type heavy police vehicle and special police units entering and leaving the cordoned-off area. Additional police officers blocked the streets.
According to witnesses, at around 6 pm CET, two men wearing balaclavas were seen leaving the Apple Store, but were spotted by nearby police. The two men then reportedly took a civilian hostage before going back into the shop. Social media footage showed one assailant holding the hostage with a handgun.
Amsterdam Police wrote on Twitter that an armed intruder was ‘in/near the shop in question’ and that ‘specialist units’ were in place “to get the situation under control.” Witnesses nearby reported hearing shots fired, while police requested local residents and businesses at Leidseplein to stay inside.
