New EP president Metsola and Macron hold presser as France takes over EU presidency

French President Emmanuel Macron and the newly elected President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola hold a press conference in the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Wednesday, January 19.

It marks the beginning of the six-month French presidency of the European Union.

Macron is set to explain the priorities of France’s presidency of the Council of the European Union. In an earlier statement, the French leader said that his country would work towards introducing a programme for a more “powerful” and “sovereign” Europe.

Metsola was elected president of the European Parliament on Tuesday, winning 458 votes in the first round of balloting.
