Nicaragua: Over 400 sea turtle babies released at wildlife refuge

Around 416 paslama turtle babies, an endangered species, were released on Sunday at the Rio Escalante Chacocente Wildlife Refuge, in Carazo.

Employees of the refuge and national and foreign tourists participated in the release of the turtles, according to local reports.

“This species comes in the season between July and January, when more than 5,000 turtles arrive,” explained Joseph Canales, a tourist guide.

Sea turtles are considered an endangered species, and Nicaragua is one of the few countries where they breed.

The commercialisation of paslama eggs is prohibited within the country.

Today we had the opportunity to release 400 turtles of this species. This species comes in the season between July and January, when more than 5,000 turtles arrive. In one month, 4,000 to 5,000 turtles come to nest here.”
