Nigeria: Ondo community facing threat of "total extinction" after area hit by more flooding

Local residents of Ayetoro were seen attempting to return to normal life somewhat on Tuesday, after a recent sea incursion which has washed away several more homes.
The town has constantly faced flooding from the sea, now exasperated by the effects of global warming and oil exploration as per local reports. The area continues to be under threat after a shore protection project, commissioned by the Niger Delta Development Commission, was abandoned.
“We are facing imminent threat and danger. We appeal to all authorities in government, all the international agencies who are aware of the challenges that we have, the global ecological effort, the World Bank, the African Development Bank to come to our aid, particularly when the storms have been completed, so that this community can be protected from total extinction,” explained local chief Oba Micah Olaseni Ajijo.
According to local reports, around 2,000 homes have been destroyed by the rising sea levels, with some 85 percent of the entire land of the area having already been claimed by the sea.

SOT, Aladetan Itunnu, Local Resident (Ilaja): “I am fed-up. I don’t know what to do. God alone is my helper. We beg on the government of the world to come to our rescue.”
