Nigeria: Protests flare outside IPOB's leader Nnmadi Kanu's trial in Abuja

Protests broke out between supporters and non-supporters of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), on Wednesday during his trial at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Nigerian security officers were seen wielding guns and shooting fire gas to disperse IPOB supporters who came to rand in solidarity with Kanu during the proceedings.

IPOB has been accused of violence and destruction in the eastern part of Nigeria. Still, according to Louis Ogochukwu, an IPOB member, “This insecurity in the east is a result of the injustice that the Muhammed Buhari government introduced in IPOB land, by the invading military people and killing them.”

A group of protesters accusing Kanu of terrorism marched with banners and signs while chanting ‘one Nigeria,’ under the watch of the Nigerian security officers.

Kanu’s previous leading counsel, Mike Ozekhome, has accused the Federal Government of denying Kanu the necessary facilities to defend himself against charges.

The separatist leader of IPOB has pleaded not guilty to 15 charges of felony and terrorism.

Additional charges were filed on Tuesday, linked to broadcasts the secessionist made between 2018 ad 2021 on IPOB-run Radio Biafra.

The court has adjourned the trial until February 16.

SOT, Louis Ogochukwu, IPOB member: “This insecurity in the east is a result of the injustice that the Muhammed Buhari government introduced in IPOB land, by the military invading people and killing them. If you kill my brother today, tomorrow I’ll find a way to revenge the military. If I see anywhere that they are training, I’ll join them too and get revenge because the world has reached that level. If you kill me, I’ll find a way to get revenge. So those people, individuals, they killed their brothers, sisters, burned their houses. They’re the ones forming these unknown gunmen. So, it’s not IPOB. IPOB is a very 100 percent ‘no violence movement.’ And we’ll continue it until we achieve the total restoration of Biafra.”

SOT, Israel Oparoji, Nnamdi Kanu supporter: “Nnamdi Kanu is our Moses. Nnamdi Kanu is our hero. Nnamdi Kanu is our senior brother; the breadwinner of ‘Ndigbo’ (which means Igbo people). That’s why we came from different angles to stand for him.”

M/S Anti-Nnamdi Kanu protester: “So, it is to expose him and the people behind him. They are in the National Assembly there. So many people there are funding him. And that is why they are leaning on Mr President, saying political solution. If you give him political solution, what about the other prisoners in jail? What about other killers?’’ *UPSOUND*

SOT, Mr Ifeanyi Ejiofor, Nnamdi Kanu’s lead counsel: “The court adjourned the matter to February 16, at 1 pm for the hearing of that application challenging the competence of the (inaudible) and the decision of the (inaudible) because on the face of that application, the court cannot proceed. It’s a fundamental application which goes to the root of the matter before the court.”
