Pakistan: Activists join protest as row over Indian hijab ban intensifies

Activists from the organisation ‘Jamaat e Islami protested in Karachi on Thursday against the recent hijab ban in some educational institutions in the state of Karnataka in India.

Protestors held banners reading ‘Why is the world silent on this extremism? Moodi stop terrorism,’ and signs reading ‘Hijab. My right my Pride,” as they demonstrated in the Pakistani port city.

“We call on the government of India, which has a secular constitution, to allow Muslim citizens of India, women and girls, to live according to their culture and values,” protester Aneela Anjum said at the rally.

The protest comes in response to a viral video showing hijab-wearing student Muskan being harassed by a group of men shouting “Jai Sri Ram” (Glory to Lord Ram) chants, an expression used by Indian Hindu nationalists.

The student responded by raising her hand and shouting back “Allahu Akbar” (Allah is great).

The Karnataka government closed schools and colleges across the state for three days Tuesday and banned gatherings and protests in their vicinity for two weeks.

Students at a state high school were told not to wear a hijab last month. The order soon expanded to other educational institutions in the state.

The minority Muslim community is reportedly concerned about what they describe as increasing persecution under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist government.
