Pakistan: Afghan citizens return home after re-opening of border crossing

Afghan citizens returned to their home country through the Chaman- Bab-e-Dosti border crossing on Monday after Pakistan re-opened it following successful negotiations with the Taliban.

Pakistan started to allow border crossings on Saturday after discussing the issue of repatriating stranded individuals and cross-border trade with the militant group that took over the country in a swift offensive.

Every person holding an Afghan identity card or a Refugee Registration Card issued by Pakistan is allowed to cross over again.

Footage recorded in Chaman at the border crossing shows people standing in line to enter Afghanistan.

The economically critical border sector was closed after the Taliban gained control of the region making it impossible for Afghan citizens to return from the neighbouring country.

According to officials, the opening of the border also means an economic relief for traders from both countries who now can sell and transport their goods across the state lines as before.
