Afghan refugees have built a makeshift camp in the Pakistani border city of Chaman on Tuesday. Chaman is the closest city to the Wesh–Chaman border crossing, one of the largest border crossings between the two nations. Refugees were seen building tents and receiving supplies provided by an American church group.
Afghans have flocked to Pakistan in recent weeks in as thousands attempt to flee following the Taliban’s takeover of the country.
One Afghan woman spoke of her hardship. “We left our belongings and reached Pakistan, Chaman with great difficulty. We don’t have hope right now. There is nothing to eat or drink. I have three daughters and a father to feed,” she said.
According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNCHR), Pakistan is already home to an estimated three million Afghan refugees, 1.6 million of whom are undocumented.
