Afghans were left stranded in the Pakistani border town of Chaman over the weekend after the Taliban closed the key Spin Boldak border crossing.
People, including families with young children, could be seen waiting in Chaman on Saturday and Sunday. Trucks stranded with goods could also be seen parked by the border.
“We have been in Chaman for the last four days. Me and poor people are trapped here, including us, including children, women, patients, thirsty and hungry,” explained one Afghan man, who asked the Pakistani government or the Taliban to help with their plight.
The Taliban closed the key crossing on Friday saying in a statement that the border would remain closed until Pakistan loosened, or removed entirely, entry restrictions in place on Afghan nationals.
The conflict in Afghanistan has ratcheted up since the US and its NATO allies announced the withdrawal of their troops after almost two decades.
The Taliban is already in control of broad swathes of the countryside and has reportedly captured three provincial capitals in as many days with the city of Kunduz falling on Sunday.

SOT, Afghan man (Pashto): “Be it the Taliban or the government of Pakistan, if they are listening to our voices. Or someone else. Or for the sake of Allah or have mercy on these children. For four days now, women and children have been starving and thirsty. For God’s sake, have mercy on these children and women. There is no space in the hotels. There is not much space. Whether we sleep or rest, there is no money for food, you people listen to our cries.” *ROUGH TRANSLATION*
SOT, Afghan man (Pashto): “Listen to our cries Taliban or home Pakistan government. Only have mercy on these children and women, we men can spend the night anywhere. But these children cannot live with women. The baby patient here needs the medicine. There is a funeral. I have read two funerals. She is not letting him go either. That’s the appeal.” *ROUGH TRANSLATION*
