A heavy security presence could be seen at the Chaman border on Thursday, after the key crossing was closed by the government amid ‘security concerns.’
Pakistani Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed announced the temporary suspension of the border, reportedly for “some days,” earlier on Thursday.
Several Afghanistan refugees could be seen being escorted away from makeshift camps, and loaded into vans. One of the refugees said she didn’t know whether she was being taken back to Afghanistan or somewhere in Pakistan. She says they were “driven out by force.”
The makeshift camp was removed.
Traffic at the border has increased since the Taliban takeover with thousands entering Pakistan daily. The Pakistani government said they would not allow refugees to cross anymore due to overwhelming numbers.
Pakistan currently hosts an estimated three million Afghanistan refugees.
