Hospitality workers took to the streets of Karachi on Monday, after the Sindh government imposed a partial lockdown in the province last Friday amid an increase in COVID-19 cases.

Hotel and restaurant staff joined the protest, carrying banners and chanting, demanding an end to the lockdown which prevents inter-city travel and indoor and outdoor gatherings.

“There are more than 35 thousand hotels in Karachi. We are unemployed now, 10 to 15 work in every hotel now. How will we pay them a salary? It’s more than two years now, people are fed up,” said Muhammad Khan, a local restaurant owner.

“I would request to Prime Minister that for God’s sake please save Karachi from destruction,” added Qamar Ahmed, leader of the Pak Sarzameen party.

The partial restrictions are due to end on August 8.
