Palestinian family threatens to set themselves, home on fire after Israeli eviction decision

Members of the Al-Salhiyah family climbed onto the roof of their house on Monday, threatening to explode gas cylinders and set the house and its occupants on fire if Israeli forces broke into the building.
The Israeli forces attempted to evict the family after local authorities announced an evacuation order to build a school on the plot of land.
Police and army officials were seen cordoning off the area, as members of the family climbed onto the roof in an attempt to stop the raid.
“I will burn the house and everything in it, I will not leave here, from here [I will go] to the grave,” said one family member.
As the protest continued, machines began to demolish parts of the property.
Police and the local authorities gave a joint statement that delegates arrived early Monday to carry out the eviction order, after the Al-Salhiyahs ignored ‘countless opportunities’ to vacate the land as ordered.
Several Palestinian families are facing evacuation from their houses in the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood. These families, who were displaced from their original areas to the neighborhood with the declaration of the State of Israel in 1948, are engaged in a legal battle with Israeli organisations claiming that the houses were built on lands owned by Jews before 1948.
