Panda fever was running high at Tokyo’s Ueno Zoo as visitors returned to the zoo to get a glimpse of giant panda twin cubs Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei on their first public appearance on Wednesday.
A lottery had determined the lucky ones who could get a chance to view the cute twins on their public debut for a limited period of three days.
“I had a camera, but I could only take pictures of their butts. Sleeping butts,” said a visitor Manami.
The pandas were born in June last year and had been shown to the public for the first time while all other facilities at the city’s oldest zoo remained closed. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the zoo has limited the number of visitors to the enclosure and held a lottery in which 1080 winners were drawn.
SOT, Sayumi, Visitor (Japanese): “Both mother and twins were eating bamboo grass and munching on it all the time. I took many pictures of the mother panda, because I had a great eye contact.”
SOT, Kanae, Visitor (Japanese): “Pandas are round, doughy, just black and white, so simple, but they have cute faces. Well, overall, they’re cute when they’re eating, they’re cute when they’re sleeping, and I think they’re the most powerful animals (with their cuteness).”
SOT, Kyoko, Visitor (Japanese): “Just looking at them makes me feel spongy and soothed. That’s what I love about pandas.”
SOT, Masako, Visitor (Japanese): “When I entered, both of the small twin pandas were asleep, so I could only see them sleeping, but the mother was quite active.”
SOT, Manami, Visitor (Japanese) : “I had a camera, but I could only take pictures of their butts. Sleeping butts.”
SOT, Ohashi Naoya, Director of Education and Promotion Division at Ueno Zoo (Japanese) : “Well, they are twins, so it was the first experience for us, at Ueno Zoo. In addition, the staff and keepers of the zoo have been working as hard as they can in the situation where Chinese experts cannot come to Japan due to coronavirus. With the cooperation of the Chinese side, we are happy and relieved that we have made it this far.”
