Hundreds of people protested against Pedro Castillo as he was sworn in as Peru’s new president-elect at the National Congress in Lima on Wednesday, the same day as the 200th anniversary of Peru’s declaration of independence.
“I feel indignant. I feel sad because what they have done to my country is a betrayal. They have not respected our vows. They have won with fraud, what do they want to do for my country,” said Yolanda Cardenas, an anti-Pedro Castillo protester.
Castillo and Chilean President Sebastian Pinera were seen arriving in the Torre Tagle palace, ahead of the swearing-in ceremony.
Pinera told the press that he wishes well to the new President-elect, as the well-being of Peru depends on it.
“If President Castillo does well, Peru does well and if Peru does well, we all do well,” he said.
The new President will govern from 2021 to 2026 with an electoral programme that includes a bill to reform the constitution, a new social protection system, and a special emphasis on the fight against corruption.
Castillo won the 6 June run-off election against Keiko Fujimori, who finally acknowledged the result after delaying the official announcement with accusations of fraud on several ballots.
SOT, Sebastian Pinera, President of Chile (Spanish): “President Castillo was elected by a majority of Peruvians within the democratic system and I am sure that all of us who believe in democracy respect the rules of democracy.”
SOT, Sebastian Pinera, President of Chile (Spanish): “It is a decision that corresponds to the Peruvian people. I believe a lot in respecting the decisions that are taken democratically in the countries, therefore we follow the evolution with great care and affection and we have wished President Castillo the best of luck. Because if President Castillo does well, Peru does well and if Peru does well, we all do well.”
SOT, Yolanda Cardenas, Anti-Pedro Castillo protester (Spanish): “I feel indignant I feel sad because what they have done to my country is a betrayal they have not respected our vows they have arrived with fraud, what do they want to do for my country, I prefer to die and not be a witness of what will happen to my country for my children, for my future grandchildren I have to continue fighting as far as I can live.”
SOT, Ilda Lazo, Anti-Pedro Castillo protester (Spanish): “We do not want to recognise Mr. Pedro Castillo because he is an illegitimate president and because we are declaring ourselves in insurgency, this man with the help of the National Jury, Reniec and ONPE have planned all this so that he can win with fraud.”
