Chilean President Sebastian Pinera commented on the decision of the National Prosecutor’s Office to open an investigation into alleged crimes committed by the president during the sale of a mining project, Santiago, Friday. The information on Pinera’s alleged involvement came out following the Pandora Papers investigation.

“As president of Chile, I have never, ever taken any action or carried out any management related to Minera Dominga. And, secondly, as has been public knowledge for more than 12 years now, in 2009, before assuming my first presidency, I totally disassociated myself from the administration and management of the companies in which I participated,” Pinera said.

“I have full confidence that justice, as it has already done, will confirm the inexistence of irregularities and also my total innocence,” the Chilean president added.

According to the Pandora Papers, the Pinera family sold its stake in the mining project in 2010, during his first term as president, for USD 152 million. The final payment for the deal was conditional on the mining area not being established as an environmental protection zone, which it eventually was.

A significant part of the transaction was reportedly carried out in the British Virgin Islands, a well-known tax haven.

SOT, Sebastian Pinera, President of Chile (Spanish): “A company linked to my family, like many other Chilean individuals and companies, had indirect participation in Minera Dominga, which was sold more than 10 years ago. The background to this sale, including its price, form of payment and conditions, was known to the Prosecutor’s Office, the Court of Guarantee and the Court of Appeals. All of them determined, consistently and unanimously, the inexistence of crimes and my innocence. Consequently, we do not agree with the decision announced today by the Prosecutor’s Office to open an investigation into a case that has already been heard and judged.”

SOT, Sebastian Pinera, President of Chile (Spanish): “I want to reiterate two facts that for me are fundamental. First, as president of Chile, I have never, ever taken any action or carried out any management related to Minera Dominga. And secondly, as has been public knowledge for more than 12 years now, in 2009, before assuming my first presidency, I completely disassociated myself from the administration and management of the companies in which I was involved.”

SOT, Sebastian Pinera, President of Chile (Spanish): “And, also, and it is public knowledge, together with my family, we set up blind trusts for the administration of financial assets to avoid any conflict of interest and, furthermore, in compliance with the law. Given the aforementioned background, I have full confidence that Justice, as it has already done, will confirm the non-existence of irregularities and, also, my total innocence.”

SOT, Sebastian Pinera, President of Chile (Spanish): “I want to express that during the almost 8 years that I have had the honour and responsibility to be president of Chile I have dedicated my best efforts, without sparing any sacrifice because, without a doubt, these and other unjust accusations are very painful not only for me personally but especially for my family and for all of us who participate in this government.”
