Poland: Doctor recounts treating abused refugees in Bielsk Podalski

Arsalan Azzaddin, a doctor of Kurdish origin from a hospital in the eastern Polish town of Bielsk Podlaski explained the situation for migrants he treated after they entered the country across the Polish-Belarusian border after being stranded in the forests on Sunday.

According to Azzaddin, many of the patients reported being beaten by the Belarusian police, of which the doctor showed photos on his mobile phone. The Polish border police would allegedly not let the migrants be transferred to a hospital until they had determined their poor health. After treatment, however, the doctor had to hand them back to the border police.

Rouba Doubo, a Syrian woman in her thirties, came to the hospital after being beaten by Belarusian police and told her story.

“They did not allow us to return to Belarus or to enter Poland. The Belarusian army did not allow us to go back and the Polish army did not allow us to enter and we were stuck between the borders of the two countries like many others, there were families and children and some of them were dying of cold and hunger and there was no water. We were stuck there for 12 days only when we suffered from cold and hunger. When we entered the forests, they beat our feet. Any of the armies who found us at its borders was beating us, I was pregnant with a child, but I miscarried,” recounted Doubo.

SOT, Arsalan Azzaddin, Head of emergency department at Bielsk Podlaski Hospital (English)​: “It is cold and they can not drink and they can not eat, that is the reason. Sometimes they told me, twenty of them can not eat anything. It is very dramatic.”

SOT, Arsalan Azzaddin, Head of emergency department at Bielsk Podlaski Hospital (English)​: “Usually they are picked up by police and when they see that their condition is not good, they call the ambulance. If the persons condition is good, they do not come here, they take this person to the border police then.”

If they have to come back to Belarus, they rather want to come back to their country. Everybody said this. So, there is a very very hard hand and the decision is not very simple for me to decide what will I do.”

We came from Lebanon to Belarus by plane, then we went from Belarus through the forest towards the border, and then we got stuck there. They did not allow us to return to Belarus or to enter Poland.
