SOT, Angela Merkel, German Chancellor (German): “We knew back then, that we needed to defend ourselves together within NATO against those terrorist threats, and that is why there were no further questions for us to the fact that we reacted accordingly to this. As a matter of fact, Germany showed solidarity with Afghanistan, but also Poland and other countries too. So now we have to acknowledge, that we could defeat the terrorism which was threatening us for now, but we failed to attain all goals we had put ourselves, and would have wanted to attain. Therefore from the German perspective it is important to secure that what we could achieve, the education for girls and similar, though we are aware that it will not be easy with the Taliban., especially concerning those in need.”

SOT, Angela Merkel, German Chancellor (German): “And I would add that it has always been such, that there were raw material relations between Russia and the Western countries, already in time of the Cold War. But regarding also the obligations to continue delivering gas through Ukraine until 2024, after that no more, in my viewpoint, so that it is not used for hybrid warfare. Furthermore, this goes in hand that since we already are in the midst of a process of changes, as in 2045 Germany wants to become climate-neutral.”

SOT, Angela Merkel, German Chancellor (German): “As a matter of fact, we also spoke about the raw material relations with regards to North Stream II. I once again underlined, that it is our goal that Ukraine remains a transit partner, for the transfer of Russian gas and that particularly the changes in our relations with the United States lead towards safeguarding and keeping the possibility, a safe possibility for Ukraine to remain a transit country beyond the expiration of the current transit agreement in 2024.”

SOT, Angela Merkel, German Chancellor (German): “The Prime Minister has confirmed to me once again, that these are people coming from the Belorussian territory, at least from the Polish viewpoint, which I very much endorsed. Thus, I can only appeal to the Belorussian leadership, that there is the possibility for people who find themselves there, particularly under very difficult humanitarian conditions, to be taken care of by international organisations, such as the International Red Cross or similar. But that presupposes, that not only the Polish side is willing to do so, but also the Belorussian side. Hence, the call at the Belorussian side, to take into account, that we are speaking about defenceless people of other regions that are being used as subjects of hybrid attacks. And I also said this to the Russian president, that I find this absolutely unacceptable to carry out on the backs of helpless people with their faith this kind of hybrid attacks.”

SOT, Mateusz Morawiecki, Polish Prime Minister (Polish):“We know very well how tense the situation is in the Donbas, after the annexation of Crimea. This conflict between Ukraine and Russia is constant and burning all the time. We stand on the position of respecting international law and the integrity of Ukraine. In this context, we are analysing Nord Stream II and therefore everything related to the inclusion of Ukraine and this gas pipeline system, of course also Polish, reduces tensions and would be most advisable.”
