Poland: Protest condemns approval of bill limiting foreign ownership of media companies

Thousands of protesters rallied in Warsaw on Sunday after Poland’s parliament approved a controversial media reform bill that limits foreign ownership of media companies in Poland.

The bill, which still needs to be signed into law by President Andrzej Duda, will mainly target Discovery-owned TVN24 and has caused tensions with the US.

Charge d’affaires at the US Embassy Bix Aliu said that Washington was “extremely disappointed” with the passage of the bill.

If signed into law, the media bill will most likely force US-based Discovery to sell its shares of TVN24 in Poland.

SOT, Edward Miszczak, TVN’s program director (Polish): “This is an American group (TVN- Discovery Television) but this American-ness is a problem today, today it is a reason to close the station, but it is eye-opening. This is not about America but about free media.”

SOT, Protester (Polish): “Well the media have to play their part, just like TVN or any other writing media, paper or online. They must be free. This is democracy, we supposedly have a democracy, so we have to guard that.”

SOT, Protester (Polish): “People just want to know the truth, and they see that TVN is telling the truth, so they watch TVN and our rulers do not like it. Unfortunately, they do not know this truth and they want to shut down this television, so it remains quiet.”
