Protesters rallied in Warsaw on Tuesday against a bill that critics say could shut down a US-owned broadcaster that is critical of the government.

The legislation would tighten rules on non-European ownership of Polish media.

The leader of of the Civic Platform political party, Donald Tusk, was present at the rally and accused the authorities for wanting to shut down independent media.

“These authorities want to shut down independent media because they realise that their greatest opponent is the truth. It is possible to, for some time, base your authority on lies, on fear, on indifference, on the resignation and doubts of people. But I think I can say it on behalf of all of you: You (the government) will not win, because we will not be silent, we will shout loudly. We will not listen to your lies,” said Tusk.

Parliament is scheduled to vote on the bill on Wednesday.
