Dozens in Pristina gathered outside the Kosovo Electricity Distribution Company (KEDS) on Monday to protest the ongoing energy restrictions.

Under the banner of “electricity is not a luxury” protesters marched, smashed light bulbs and demanded the removal of the current Economy Minister and the re-nationalisation of the energy sector.

An organizer Liridona Sijarina spoke at the rally saying, “the first request is to have electricity 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the second, the urgent dismissal of Economy Minister Artana Rizvanoli and the third, the return of the Kosovo Electricity Distribution Company (KEDS) to state ownership.”

Energy restrictions have been in effect in the disputed nation since December 22. Planned blackouts in Kosovo come as Europe is wrestling with an energy crisis amid soaring gas and power prices which have forced countries to issue energy consumption warnings and introduce blackouts.

SOUNDBITES:

SOT, Liridona Sijarina, Representative of the protest organizers (Albanian): “The first request is to have electricity 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the second, the urgent dismissal of Economy Minister Artana Rizvanoli and the third, the return of the Kosovo Electricity Distribution Company (KEDS) to state ownership. Prior to coming to power, Prime Minister Kurti constantly criticized the privatisation of KEDS, and let him return that company to our country now.”
