At least four public transport buses were set on fire in the capital of Chile Santiago’s main avenue, with no injuries reported.
Chileans took to the streets on International Human Rights Day, December 10, to demand the resignation of President Sebastián Piñera and the release of people detained during the country’s civil unrest.
Clashes between protesters and police were reported in several cities, as the Chilean parliament rejected a bill to grant pardon to those detained during the 2019 protests, with the exception of those accused of terrorist crimes. Government said those detained are not political prisoners as they have been accused of serious acts of violence.

Violent protests began in Chile in October 2019, when a rise in the capital’s transport fare system stemmed a national unrest against social inequality and the government in general. More than 30 people died and thousands have been injured, sparking criticism against the Carabineros – the local police - for excessive use of force.
In a recent referendum, granted as a response to the protests, Chileans voted overwhelmingly in support of rewriting their constitution, which was inherited from the 1973-1990 dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet.
