An 18-year-old Iranian weightlifter was seen training in a Quaem Shahr County gym on Sunday, in preparation for his attempt to set a new world record.

The talented Alireza Yousefi explained how he had taken up the sport 9 years prior and had been training professionally for the past 4 years.

At the 2021 World Weightlifting Championships Yousefi managed to break the youth record, previously set in 2019 by Ali Davoudi, by lifting 238kg in the clean and jerk.

“I worked very hard to break this record,” stated Yousefi.

The young athlete has been supported by both his coach and family, with his father having encouraged him to enter the realm of sports.

“He has a great future. If they pay attention to him, which they do not, he can break heavy records at this young age,” said weightlifting club manager Ghasem Ghazalian.

Regarding his future plans, Yousefi said that he would like to further better the youth record, as well as breaking the adult weightlifting record, to ‘regain the world record in the name of Iran.’

But, well, I got a little annoyed after the match and I have to treat it.”

SOT, Ghasem Ghazalian, Weightlifting club manager (Farsi): “He has a great future. If they pay attention to him, which they do not, he can break heavy records at this young age. Weightlifting from the beginning is associated with a series of pains that children do not like at a young age. Weightlifting exercises should be done daily. He himself was very interested. Sometimes I could get him to practice, sometimes he would go by himself. He had very good perseverance. Thank God, so far he has been able to achieve the result we wanted.”
