Russia: 16 dead after explosion at gunpowder factory in Ryazan

At least 16 people died after an explosion and fire at a gunpowder factory in the Ryazan region on Friday.

Russia’s Ministry of Emergency Situations said the fire broke out early Friday morning as “the result of a technological process” at the PGUP Elastik factory located in the Shilovsky district.

Seventeen people were inside the factory as the fire started, according to the regional head Vladimir Lukantsev. According to the TASS news agency, the sole survivor was airlifted to a regional hospital after suffering burns to 80 percent of his body.

Russia’s Investigative Committee has opened a case into violation of safety requirements on hazardous facilities.
