Russia: Relatives wait to hear from workers after Ryazan gunpowder factory explosion kills 16

Relatives and family members arrived on Friday at the PGUP Elastik gunpowder factory in the Ryazan region to seek info on their loved ones after at least 16 people were killed in an explosion in the plant.

One man said he hadn’t received any news about his relative who worked at the factory located in the Shilovsky district.

“I don’t have any information either. My nephew is here, I don’t know if he is dead or alive,” he said.

Russia’s Ministry of Emergency Situations said the explosion occurred early Friday morning as “the result of a technological process”.

According to the head of the Shilovsky district administration Vladimir Lukantsov, 17 people were inside the plant at the time of the explosion.

The TASS news agency reported that the sole survivor was airlifted to hospital after suffering burns to 80 percent of his body.
Authorities said after the explosion that eighteen violations of safety rules at the plant have been recorded in the last five years.

Russia’s Investigative Committee has opened a case into violation of safety requirements on hazardous facilities.

Reporter: “Did he start his shift at eight in the morning?”

Relative: “Yes, he is a loader.”

Reporter: “They say the fourth workshop exploded”.

Relative: “They didn’t say which workshop, but they said that it was in the LLC ‘Razryad’”.

SOT, Reporter (Russian): “In which workshop does your son work?”

Mother of gunpowder factory worker: “In LLC ‘Razryad.’”

Reporter: “Is LLC ‘Razryad’ in the fourth workshop?”

Mother of worker: “Yes.”

Reporter: “They say that there was an explosion today in the fourth workshop. Do you have any news about your son?”

Mother of worker: “No.”
