Mandatory Credit: Russian Investigative Committee
Russian authorities are investigating allegations of abuse and sexual assault in a Saratov region prison hospital after videos allegedly showing brutal violence against inmates were leaked. The regional Investigative Committee has opened at least four criminal cases, as reported on Wednesday.
According to officials, cases were initiated for a crime specified in paragraph ‘a’ of part two of Article 132 of the Russia Criminal Code (‘Sexual violence’), while two other cases are classified under paragraph ‘a’ of part three of Article 286 of the Russia Criminal Code (‘Abuse of authority involving the use or threat of violence’).
Moreover authorities are also investigating three more criminal cases “on four episodes of crimes under article 132 of the Russia Criminal Code” which were allegedly committed from January 2020 to May 2021 in regard to four prisoners.
On Tuesday, Gulagu.net, a rights group focused on abuse in the penitentiary system, published a compilation of photos and videos of alleged abuses in hospital No. 1 of the Russian Federal Penitentiary Service (FSIN) in the Saratov region. The group says they got hold of more than 40 gb of related materials.
When asked by journalists about the leak, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitri Peskov said that “if the authenticity of this material is confirmed, it would be grounds for a serious investigation.”
Following the publication of the leaked materials, the Russian Federal Penitentiary Service announced the dismissal of four hospital and prison officials. The head of the Federal Penitentiary Service of the Saratov Region Alexei Fedotov resigned amidst the reports.
